Many people have acne scars and most everyone has had or will have skin issues sometime in their lives. Careful and focused treatments by a professional can manage lasting acne scars and even diminish their appearance permanently.
Acne scars can make us self-conscious. Cosmetic dermatology and a custom treatment plan is always an option to transform the look of your skin and increase your self-confidence.
Types Of Acne Scars
There are many different forms of acne scars and one person can have several different forms of these scars on their skin.
- Ice Pick: Ice Pick scars are small and narrow depressions in the skin that usually occur on the cheeks.
- Rolling Depression: Rolling scars are depressions of various sizes with smooth edges. The skin appears wavy.
- Box Car: Box Car scars are square-shaped depressions with sharp edges that are usually on the jaw and lower areas of the cheeks. These scars may also be caused by other skin conditions, such as chickenpox, and are usually found where your skin is thicker.
- Pigmentary Change: Pigmentary changes refer to dark or otherwise discolored patches that formed on the skin underneath recently healed acne. Sometimes these discolorations don’t go away.
Acne Scar Treatment Options
ReSurfacing
Resurfacing can be done with chemical peels and dermabrasion. The process can also be done with a laser that removes the top layer of the skin. Resurfacing can be done on all forms of acne but doesn’t do as well on darker skin tones.
Retinoids
Retinoids are derivatives of Vitamin A that exfoliate, clear pores to increase the efficiency of other treatments and/or medications. It reduces acne in general and therefore reduces the chance of further scarring.
Chemical Peels
A chemical peel is a strong acid that is placed on the skin to combat deeper scars. Chemical peels are great for any type of acne.
Microneedling
Microneedling is performed with a device that makes microperforations in the skin to induce a growth of collagen that can heal the scar. Microneedling is a great option for any depressed scars.
Most of our patients have a mixture of different types of scars so a combination of treatments may be required. One treatment does not fit all patients and all problems.
